We are all aware of the time.
Something is always pressing . . .
Our multiple glances at watches, clocks, or cell phone faces might even suggest we are a bit neurotic.
We gather information in our minds and on our desks to prepare for tomorrow’s appointments and meetings and projects and exams.
Often tomorrow’s concerns weigh so heavy on our minds that enjoyment of today’s blessing is sorely overlooked.
To Plan or Not To Plan?
It’s not that preparing is a bad thing. Quite the opposition. I find great comfort in organizing and planning for as many known details as possible.
But it’s more than the planning… it’s the mindset…
Treasure every moment as precious and unique.
Discipline your mind to remain focused in the same physical location as your body.
This is not some odd metaphysical suggestion! It’s encouragement to really hear your friend as she talks and not just nod and uh-huh them while your mind is off planning dinner or tomorrow’s meeting agenda.
Master of the Moment
Have you ever thought about Jesus’ response to Lazarus’ death?
His best friend, John, wrote “Jesus wept.” (John 11:35)
Why did he weep? He knew he would raise Lazarus from the dead. He knew the power of God Almighty. He knew the joy that would soon follow.
…I probably would have been planning the invites and menu for the evening’s festivities celebrating Lazarus’ return…
But, Jesus wept.
He grieved the loss. He felt the pain of that moment. John tells us that Jesus “was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.” (John 11:33b)
Jesus fully embraced the moment in time … fully experiencing the emotional roller coaster to come.
Let’s get in the roller coaster seat right behind our Lord and perfect role model.
Your Turn
Today, live each moment. Be fully present in it’s joys, hurts, and messiness.
Are you on vacation? Don’t be troubled that it’s almost over…rejoice that you have another day!
Are you getting ready for a trip? Don’t wish away the days until it arrives…thrive in your days to prepare and enjoy the anticipation.
Are you struggling with a loss? Don’t push through it and set your grief aside too soon. Allow yourself time and space to weep and to mourn.
Are you rejoicing in a blessing? Don’t move on so fast. Shout to the world what the Lord has done! Celebrate and testify to His goodness and grace.
…wow…the ride can get a bit wild…! Let’s do it!
Your message was just was I needed to hear for myself and to share with someone close to me who is growing in faith. Thank you for sharing this eloquent message of truth.
Thanks for sharing, Karen! I’m delighted that this note can encourage beyond just this page. :-) Many many blessings to you as you reach out to others who are growing in their faith.
Sharon, I always need to be reminded of this. I am horrible about my mind moving ahead while my body lags behind. I lay in the motel bed the first night of vacation and think, 5 nights till I have to go home. I plan two excursions and find myself rushing through the first one while I worry about the second. If you find me a conference, please remind me to breath…
Sharon,
I really loved this post. This sentence especially spoke to me:”Today, live each moment. Be fully present in it’s joys, hurts, and messiness.” I so often want to rush through every moment of the day, eager to move on to the next thing I need to do.
Thank you so much for this simple and yet powerful message. I needed to hear this today and must remember it every day:)
So glad that this post touched your heart! It’s truly a message I have to remind myself daily. Thanks for stopping by and for adding your encouraging words, Tweeny!
