Would People Know You?

Are you the same person at home as you are at work?
…as you are at school?
…as you are with friends?

Some people create themselves to be several different people:
…a difficult work environment causes a harsh, stoic side of one’s personality to emerge
…an unloveable home life constructs thick walls of apathy
…intense, overachieving, academic conditions develop chronic overachievers.

Living into each of these realities consumes vast amounts of emotional energy.

A Few Questions…

Would you be embarrassed if your boss or co-workers or your mom read your tweets, facebook posts or text messages?

Would they recognize you in your written records?

Is your language different? Not just speaking in a foreign language if you have the amazing ability to be bi-lingual, but your vocabulary? Do foul words roll trippingly off your tongue when certain friends are around … then you clean up your language when around your mom?

What about your faith community? Are you a different person in your house of worship than when you are outside the building? That is hypocritical. That drives people away from faith.

What about when the door is closed and you are alone? Who are you then? Would your closest friends recognize you?

Your Turn…

Be attentive to yourself today.

If you notice yourself putting on a new personality, shed it. Be yourself.

Be the person the Lord created you to be and not the person you think others think you should be.

Close the day by reading Psalm 139.
